“My dog is not one of those protection trained dogs, but if someone ever attacked me, I know it would defend me”. That’s a whole lot of wishful thinking, since Ed Frawley says that in 99% cases, when a dog is attacked or threatened, it will choose avoidance and will most probably turn away from the challenge and run away, leaving their handler to fend for themselves.
Every Dog is Unique – Protection Trained Dogs
Just like a human being is born with artistic genes, or skillful hands, or an inquisitive mind, the dogs also have their very own gene pool. Some dogs have a natural tendency for protection work; others might just be born with happy-go-lucky genes. In such circumstances, no amount of hard work or training will do its two bits and you will eventually end up with a very confused little puppy.
A dog will not necessarily act in the same way, we wish it to. There are certain compartments to a dog’s brain that need to be nurtured and polished, before the skill of protection can be handled. Teaching a dog these skills require training.
The Different Drives – Protection Trained Dogs
The first and foremost thing a dog needs to learn is his different drives. A dog must learn to appreciate and differentiate between two primary modes: a defensive mode and an attacking mode. It cannot possibly act on both drives at the same time. Just like a football playing team needs to choose its drive, and cannot possibly attack and defend at the same time, a dog needs to understand the same difference as well.
There is another drive, called avoidance. This is that stop where the dog should be able to tell if the fight it’s planning to have is worth it, or not. Will it come out of it victorious, or a sore loser? And if victorious, will it be able to see the dawn of the next day or simply succumb to its injuries? Such a fight is best avoided.
Learn the Value – Protection Trained Dogs
Protection trained dogs can be used in hundreds of different scenarios, but obviously, where protection is required. They can be used to protect the house, or a person, or protect an agency, or a shipment.
A well trained guard dog becomes a valuable member of any family, or team and a great much is relied on its sense of protection. It can scare off the would- be intruders, or snarl at the potential threat, or just plain scare the living day lights out of your stalker ex-boyfriend. Protection trained dogs are an asset.
